Kitchen Utensils And Your Kitchen Needs
Basic kitchen utensils such as knives, forks and spoons are necessary but often overlooked items that are certainly important in our everyday use. Eating a meal without the use of these basic utensils could be quite a difficult task. Can you envision eating soup with no spoon?
Wood is among the first materials used to create kitchen utensils. Wooden kitchen utensils have been around for centuries. In western culture, silver utensils were mainly used by royalty, aristocrats and other wealthy individuals, because silver was considered to be an expensive and precious alloy. As such, poor people used cheap steel and wooden utensils for their kitchen activities.
Many people today use wooden utensils in their kitchen. Although they may be considered to be a more traditional kitchen item, today more modern versions of old favorites are being created. These come in a wide range of designs and are of excellent quality. The most popular utensils include serving spoons, pestles and mortars, rolling pins and ladles.
The latest rage is now T&G waxed wooden utensils. Almost everyone is buying them for their modern kitchen sets now. Wooden utensils need extra care and maintenance so they will last a long time. Remember to always hand-wash wooden utensils. By putting wooden utensils in the dishwasher, they will cause the wood to eventually crack due to the heat. Be sure to wash your wooden kitchen utensils with cool water, and mild dishwashing soap and a soft sponge.
Utensils commonly develop a grain raise when held. Moisture presence will slightly raise the grain of the wood. Removing this is simple, just use some sandpaper and rub the utensil gently. Wash and dry the utensil with a clean cloth. If you don't have sandpaper try using an old brown bag, these contain fibers which can act similarly to sandpaper.
Heavy sanding will remove burns, stains and and any dents that you may find on the utensil. Overnight soaking of any dented areas allows the wood to expand and makes dent removal much easier. These utensils make wonderful, versatile gifts for all kinds of occasions including bridal showers and housewarmings. Every kitchen should be stocked with these helpful utensils.
Kitchen utensils have been around for a long time, in fact wooden utensils have been around for a very long time. Common people used them for everyday meals, as metal silverware was reserved for only the very wealthiest. Of course they do have drawbacks, they can be burned, marred, scratched, stained, or dented; however, unlike metal silverware wooden utensils can be easily repaired with sand paper or even a brown paper bag acting as sandpaper. They are truly a must have in all kitchens, and really do make great gifts for any occaision.
